A great read, Michelle! It makes me wonder what the generational gap for risk aversion between ours and the upcoming ones will be. I love the tweet and convo screenshots, lol.
Thank you! And I think about this a lot actually. Sometimes I wonder if my children will lack whatever it was that I gained from my parents experience. Or maybe they'll feel secure enough to branch out on their own. So hard to say!
This was a fun read. I've heard a ton of my friends share similar experiences. Personally, maybe I'm the oddball. My folks encouraged me to take risks - perhaps less so now 😂. Also on a sidenote, I need to figure out the secret behind Michelle's wildfire comment section in substack.
That's so interesting Sairam! I think that's wonderful, the perfect balance is having a home base but the encouragement to go and do your own thing.
haha, I'm not sure what the secret sauce is, but I'm sure it helps no one has to reveal their knowledge of AI in my comments, just good ole fashion feelings 😂 Thank you for the comment!
Thank you Stephanie, they are pretty great and definitely make me laugh. That's so interesting you didn't tell your mom, but also something I've heard quite often!
I also realized I haven't comment back on your last request, feel free to email me at michellevarghoose (at) gmail if you ever want to find time to chat!
Ah yes, it's a tale as old as time! I'm happy to hear it resonated. LOL maybe too much, my mom would love to have someone to swap notes with - even at this age!
Michelle, I love the line "pathless path" and your story resonates with me. I'm on the pathless path with you too. I love how you write about your parents.
Thank you for the comment! I know we chatted about this after, "pathless path" I have to give full credit to Paul Millerd's haha. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the part about my parents, it's an interesting relationship to explore in my writing!
Thank you so much for sharing Pratik! I've thought about this a lot. I found my parents to be strict growing up, but now seeing how things ended up, I can't help but think it was a good way to raise us. Funny how that works!
Great reflections Michelle! The cycle you mention on risk taking by our parents is so true and accurate. And you always make laugh, that text exchange with your mom is hilarious 😂
Great read! Congrats on the feature as well. :)
Thank you so much Alexandra! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Thoroughly enjoyed your story here and your balanced perspective! Great read :)
Thank you so much Jess, I'm glad to hear you found it interesting!

Also congrats on the guest post!
Thank you so much Tai!

This was a great read and I love your parents! I didn’t tell my mom I quit my job for months because I didn’t want her to worry!

My parents are like yours, so this deeply personal story resonated deeply.
Thank you.
ps your mum is totally right . I think my mum and your mum have been swapping notes with each other 😎

Reminded me of this old post: https://medium.com/@pratikstephen/why-youre-going-to-be-as-strict-with-your-kids-as-your-parents-are-with-you-a23a40fefa98

Thank you Oscar! I'm lucky because my mom provides me with all the comedy I need for my essays.
